This position is funded from the Commonwealth''s annual operating budget.Duties:
The Recreation Therapist (RT) develops therapeutic goals and objectives by identifying those which require individual attention. They consult with and provide feedback to professional staff in developing, implementing and/or evaluating individual or group programs. The RT plans and organizes recreational, social, instructional or special activities by conferring with administrative staff to obtain approval of, and funding for new or ongoing programs and activities. They also assess/evaluate recreation needs and interests to determine which veterans will participate in recreational activities. It is necessary to arrange transportation for trips, accompany veterans on outings, and supervises group activities such as beano games, tournaments, etc. The RT motivates veterans to participate in recreational activities through education and counseling. They develop and implement innovative recreation programs for those veterans functioning at various levels of physical, mental and/or emotional impairment. The RT conducts training and briefing sessions for veterans and agency personnel to inform them of types of services and recreational programs available and to provide relevant instructions. They also requisition supplies and equipment by determining operational inventory and supplies needed. The RT documents assessments, completes progress reports and records of goals and objectives for veterans, and maintains attendance records. They participate in staff or interdisciplinary team meetings, seminars and professional development conferences and workshops when directed. The RT assists veterans in developing relaxation techniques, body awareness, spatial relationships, body image understanding and gross and fine motor skill. They perform related work as needed.
Qualifications:
Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in planning, organizing, instituting or conducting therapeutic recreation services in a recognized public or private agency, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitution below.
Substitutions:
I. A Bachelor''s or higher degree with a major in recreation, recreation education, creative arts therapy or therapeutic recreation may be substituted for the required experience.
Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
Special Requirements: Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator''s license.
