Senior Medical Technologist ASCP



The Chelsea HealthCare Center is a comprehensive primary health care center. The Chelsea Health Center Laboratory is a moderately sized CORE laboratory that focuses on moderate to high complexity testing. Testing encompasses Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis and limited Microbiology. Phlebotomy, EKG s and specimen collection are performed in the health center laboratory also.

Responsibilities encompass the daily routine operations of the Laboratory; immediate supervision of Technologists; coordination of work to provide service; monitoring of test procedures and test results to ensure conformance to laboratory quality control criteria and hospital/department policies and procedures. Confers with staff on patients regarding any concerns they might have. Ensures that the space in the Laboratory is consistently maintained in a hygienically safe and functional condition; record keeping and submission of reports as required by the Supervisor.


Provides immediate supervision to technical staff and assures accomplishment of routine laboratory functions; may assist in scheduling work hours and arranging for adequate coverage on assigned shift. Assigns, reviews, and checks work for completeness, accuracy, timeliness, and conformance to established standards. Provides input to supervisors regarding employee performance, recommending and taking corrective action, as appropriate; resolves routine employee problems.

Oversees all quality control procedures. Performs routine controls on instruments. Performs crossover studies (lot to lot reagent/control changes). Performs quality surveillance and checks competencies of Technologists. Provides initial and continuing technical training to medical technologists in the Lab. Maintains all records for quality assurance and OSHA standards. Performs routine maintenance on instruments and troubleshoots instrument malfunctions. Performs special projects and helps with new instrument evaluations, as required.

Follows all safety (including infection control and hazardous material) policies and procedures. Notifies supervisor of unsafe conditions. Successfully participates in safety education and competency activities. Recommends appropriate policy and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Responds to and resolves all unsafe conditions.

Assists technologists with more difficult analyses, interprets results, and performs unusual or complicated tests.

Operates computer terminal to enter and retrieve pertinent laboratory reports; corrects inaccurate laboratory data. Troubleshoots problems that may arise with computer program. Performs minor maintenance on computer terminals , as necessary; notifies the Computer Help Desk of major malfunctions or problems.

Maintains close liaison with other laboratory sections and hospital staff to provide coordination of activities which affect patient care. Functions as resource person for medical and nursing staff in regard to diagnostic testing.

Interprets abnormal results and provides guidance to techs.

Maintains equipment and work area in safe and functional condition at all times.

Prioritizes laboratory work in accordance with hospital/department requirements.

Attends workshops and seminars to update knowledge of both technical and managerial topics.

Assists lab leadership with:

Orientation, competency assessment and training of new personnel in all lab areas.

Lab policy/procedure updates

New test/technology/LIS validations and upgrades

Shift assignments and/or staffing schedules

Implementation of changes to meet regulatory compliance

Report all issues and QC failures to Supervisor, as appropriate.

Addresses all service complaints from all customers, patients, medical and lab staff; work with lab leadership to formulate appropriate response.

Performs bench testing 80% of the time.

Responsible for lab startup. Responsible for transmitting QC results for evaluation. Functions as acting supervisor when no supervisor is on site.

Expectations when in charge of shifts: if regularly assigned charge duties, may supervise shift(s) up to 20% of total work time; investigate and document disciplinary issues in conjunction with/directed by lab leadership; investigate and document events for safety reports in conjunction with/directed by lab leadership. Responsible for miscellaneous reports such as safety reports, QA repots and correction forms.

Recommends updates in reviewing/editing the laboratory procedure manual.

Responsible for clinical results of all age groups.


May be exposed to disease-bearing specimens, hazardous chemicals or fumes, other hazards normally associated in a clinical laboratory setting. Work environment may be noisy or crowded.


May supervise up to 8-10 technologists/CLAs/Phlebotomists. Acting supervisor.


Needs to conserve expendable resources and supplies wherever possible.



BS or BA in Science from an accredited college; Bachelors degree in Medical Technology preferred. AND

National Certification AND

Significant or specialized experience



National certification AND

Two years performance evaluations which exceed expectations at MT2 AND

Works independently AND

Twenty hours of documented continuing education in previous 2 years within division, hospital or external programs OR

Participation in divisional operations improvement projects OR

Participation in development and implementation of new testing methods

Read, write and comprehend English sufficiently to communicate with patients, laboratory or hospital staff and follow procedures.

Basic anatomy and physiology.

Understand relevant theory to effectively evaluate accuracy of results.

Basic computer and keyboard skills.

Knowledge of quality control and operations policies and procedures.

Knowledge of current regulatory policies.

Document and enter test information accurately.

Communicate effectively with all laboratory and hospital staff, patients, instrument service representatives and outside locations.

Possess manual dexterity and visual accuracy.

Capable of physical exertion, including walking, standing, sitting and bending and lifting up to 40 pounds.

Able to work under stress of time constraints and heavy workload demands requiring accuracy.

Able to successfully complete design and implementation of projects.

Able to successfully complete required senior tech competencies.

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
